The pensioner was travelling on a Southeastern train from London Bridge to to Woolwich Arsenal when he was ambushed by three girls, according to British Transport Police.
Officers described the unprovoked attack as “vicious and cowardly”.
At around 11pm on the same day, an elderly woman was approached and assaulted by a girl on a train from London Bridge to Erith.
A brave female witness attempted to step in – who the same girl also tried to assault.
Cops believe the same group of teens were involved in both incidents.
The images, released today, show one girl in a pink top over a black coat with a furry hood.
Another is seen in a black jacket with a red logo on the right sleeve.
She is also wearing grey trousers and black shoes.
The third appears to be wearing a black jacket over a grey tracksuit.
British Transport Police are urgently appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the force described the attacks as “appalling”.
They said: “These were appalling attacks on vulnerable individuals who were simply going about their journeys.
“We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour on our rail network and urge anyone who recognises the girls in these images to come forward.”
Anyone who recognises any of the three girls is asked to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 770 of 18 March.
