OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- As we are hours away from a special election in Oakland, residents will decide on the next mayor, a new city councilmember and a sales tax intended to help close an enormous budget deficit.

With the clock winding down, the top two candidates for Oakland's next mayor are racing against time. Former Oakland City Councilmember Loren Taylor and former East Bay Congresswoman Barbara Lee are looking to be elected to the city's top seat.

This special election takes place after voters recalled Mayor Sheng Thao in November. That started in motion this special election.

Taylor and Lee have been talking to voters about their plans if elected. Both have drilled down on tackling what's projected as a massive budget shortfall and public safety concerns.

Lee has come under scrutiny for not being in Oakland as she was in Congress.

So far, mail-in ballots have been slow. Turnout has not been great, but officials are hoping that won't be the case some Tuesday, the Alameda County Registrar of Voters confirmed with KRON4.

There are nine voting centers that open at 7 a.m. Tuesday and will remain open until 8 p.m. There are also 18 dropboxes -- all where you can drop off your ballot in Oakland. You can also go to the Oakland Courthouse and drop it off there.
