DENVER (KDVR) — A truck driver sentenced in a deadly crash on U.S. 285 near Conifer was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to a spokesperson.
ICE Denver told FOX31 on Monday that 47-year-old Ignacio Cruz-Mendoza, a citizen of Mexico, was arrested on Sunday and taken to the ICE Denver Contract Detention Facility. Cruz-Mendoza is pending removal from the U.S.
Cruz-Mendoza was sentenced to one year in jail for his role in a deadly 2024 crash. On June 11, 2024, the Colorado State Patrol said Cruz-Mendoza was driving southbound on U.S. 285 near Conifer when he side-swiped five vehicles after attempting to pass them. His big rig jack-knifed across the highway, and his load of pipe and angle iron eventually came loose.

One person, 64-year-old Scott Miller, was killed in the crash, and a woman was injured.
ICE: Cruz-Mendoza has been in and out of US 16 times
According to ICE, Cruz-Mendoza entered the U.S. prior to 2002, and Enforcement and Removal Operations first discovered Cruz-Mendoza when he was reportedly arrested in Jefferson County, Oregon, on April 16, 2002. He was taken into custody and issued a notice to appear for immigration proceedings.

Following Cruz-Mendoza's arrest after the deadly crash, ICE said ERO Denver officers lodged a detainer to be notified of his possible release. On March 30, Cruz-Mendoza was taken into custody by ICE.
