MCSO: Human remains identified as missing Ukiah man ...Middle East

News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

The human remains found along Low Gap Road in Ukiah last weekend have been identified as those of a Ukiah man reported missing early last year, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.

According to the MCSO, an autopsy on the skeletal remains found in the 1800 block of Low Gap Road on March 22 was performed on March 24, and “medical records were obtained for a known missing person in the Ukiah area and utilized for comparison when conducting the autopsy.”

During the autopsy, the MCSO reports, the deceased person was “positively identified as Angel Murguia-Martinez, a 25-year-old male from Ukiah, (who had been) reported as a missing person to the Ukiah Police Department in February of 2024.”

The MCSO notes that Murguia-Martinez’s legal next-of-kin have been notified of his death, the “official cause and manner of which will be determined by a forensic pathologist and released when all forensic examination reports and tests have been completed.”

Murguia-Martinez’s remains were found by a group picking up trash in the 1800 block of Low Gap Road March 22, and who reported to the MCSO around 9:50 a.m. that possible human remains had been found in the area.

When they arrived, MCSO deputies “contacted members of a local non-profit group who were conducting trash clean-up in the area. Deputies were advised that while cleaning up trash, one of the non-profit group members located what was believed to be human remains, (and upon a further search of the area), deputies located what they confirmed to be adult human remains.”

Following the discovery, investigators from both the MCSO and the Ukiah Police Department responded to the scene to process evidence and begin “researching active missing persons cases in an attempt to assist with identifying the human remains.”

At the time of its first press release, the MCSO noted that while the cause and manner of death is still “actively being investigated, foul play is not suspected. When asked for more details, including approximately how long ago the person died, MCSO spokesman Capt. Quincy Cromer said “it appears the remains were there for an extended period of time and it was skeletal remains that were recovered.”

The MCSO requests that anyone with information “regarding this investigation call the Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center at 707-463-4086, or information can also be provided anonymously by calling the non-emergency tip line at 707-234-2100.”
