Greeley City Council proclaims March as National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month ...Saudi Arabia

Greeley City Council on Tuesday proclaimed March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, urging all residents to support programs that serve people with developmental disabilities and to treat them with the dignity and respect they deserve.

The proclamation recognizes the growing population of children and adults with developmental disabilities residing within Greeley and the unfortunate history regarding them. In the past, people with developmental disabilities were institutionalized and segregated from their families, friends and communities.

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan officially declared March as National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, hoping to deliver a brighter future and greater opportunities for those individuals.

“Americans are becoming increasingly aware that such disabilities need not keep individuals from realizing their full potential in school, at work or at home as members of their families and of their communities,” Mayor John Gates said, quoting Reagan’s original speech.

During the proclamation, Gates recognized the Arc of Northeast Colorado for proudly supporting National Developmental Awareness Month and providing residents with disabilities both the encouragement and opportunities they need to achieve their full potential. The Arc is a Greeley-based advocacy organization that works to help people with intellectual and development disabilities in Weld County and six surrounding counties: Morgan, Logan, Sedgwick, Phillips, Washington and Yuma.

“This proclamation is more than just words, it’s a statement of inclusion, recognition and commitment to ensuring that the individuals with developmental disabilities are valued as vital members of this community,” Arc of Northeast Colorado representative Debbie Warner said. “As a community, we must continue to advocate for accessibility, inclusive education and employment opportunities that empower individuals to reach their full potential.”
