SAN MATEO, Calif. (KRON) -- Voters in San Mateo County are showing up to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in a special election. If Measure A passes, it would give the county’s board of supervisors the power to remove Sheriff Christina Corpus from office.

The sheriff is facing allegations from within her department, including intimidating her staff, having an inappropriate relationship with an employee and making racist and homophobic comments.

Corpus has refused calls to step down.

“I’ve received death threats because of this ... For people just to do this to get me out of office is an all-time low,” Corpus told KRON4 in a one-on-one interview.

If voters approve Measure A, the supervisors would be able to kick the sheriff out of office for breaking the law related to the sheriff’s duties, repeated neglect of duties, misappropriation of public funds, falsifying documents or obstructing an investigation.

Four out of the five supervisors would have to vote in favor of removing the sheriff from office.

Supporters of Measure A, including the San Mateo County Deputy Sheriff's Association, say Corpus is putting public safety at risk. Opponents claim that Tuesday’s special election is a power grab.

The polls will remain open until 8 p.m. Tuesday.
