I have been saying for months now that the Milwaukee Brewers lost a lot of quality innings over the past 12 months and haven’t replaced them, and I’ve also noted that Jose Quintana was still out there as perhaps the last quality starting pitcher in free agency. But I generally discussed the latter in connection to Quintana’s last team, the New York Mets, because the could really use a starting pitcher, too.
Here’s hoping that the Mets’ refusal to re-sign Quintana is a sign that they think he’s cooked:
Free-agent pitcher Jose Quintana and the Milwaukee Brewers are in agreement on a one-year contract, according to sources familiar with the deal.
— Robert Murray (@ByRobertMurray) March 3, 2025So, there are your additional innings for the Brewers, who trail the Cubs in the projected NL Central standings, but, you know, we can never safely believe that.
Quintana, 36, has been on a bit of an odyssey since he departed the Cubs five years ago. He has spent time with the Angels, Giants, Cardinals, Pirates, and Mets, and although he was terrible in 2021, he’s actually been pretty solid each of the last three seasons. The projection systems have him as something of a below-average starting pitcher in 2025, which he may or may not ultimately be, but that still might mean an overall upgrade for a pitching-needy Brewers roster.
In sum: I hate this. I am not freaking out or anything, obviously, but I just kinda hate that the Brewers were able to supplement their greatest need this late in the offseason for what is probably very cheap.
Maybe he’ll stink. Please and thanks.
