Today is the final day of February, a Friday on which there are some important games to be played for Blackhawks prospects at the college level. Every game is important, but we’ve now reached the time of year when there’s even more emphasis on winning because conference tournaments begin soon (one week from today for the Big Ten).
Beyond conference tournament placement, there are a number of schools with Blackhawks prospects that have bigger dreams. Ryan Greene went back to Boston University this season because he wants to go to a third straight Frozen Four — and win it this time. Meanwhile, Aidan Thompson and Denver want to repeat at national champions.
The NCAA announces the 16-team field for the Road to the Frozen Four on March 23 when all of the conference tournaments wrap. That field will be made up of six conference champions and 10 at-large bids, selected by the committee (based largely on PairWise rankings).
As we’ve noted throughout this season, the Blackhawks’ collection of college prospects all fall into one of the Big Ten, Hockey East or the NCHC. Which means, in a best case scenario, three teams with Blackhawks prospects will win automatic bids as conference champions. Four others will have to fight to get in, and that begins with wins this weekend.
Here’s where teams with Blackhawks prospect rank in the most recent PairWise Rankings (from USCHO):
3. Minnesota6. Providence7. Boston University9. Denver18. North Dakota39. Minnesota-Duluth
I will note that, entering this weekend, Minnesota-Duluth is seventh in the NCHC. They face Miami (OH) this weekend — the last place (and winless) team in the conference. If they handle their business, they would avoid the 8-9 game on March 12 and jump straight to the quarterfinals that weekend. Should they lose to what appears to be Arizona State in the first round of the conference playoffs, Dominic James could sign and join the Blackhawks as soon as the March 16-17 range.
