Two Greeley men face felony charges after police found them hiding at an elementary school with drugs and a gun after fleeing from officers.

Police arrested 30-year-old Juan Soto-Gallegos and 29-year-old Giovani Perea on the morning of Feb. 15 after the two fled from officers at a gas station before abandoning their vehicle and hiding at the school, according to affidavits for their arrests.

Soto-Gallegos faces charges of intent to distribute a controlled substance, vehicular eluding, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, obstructing a police officer and driving with a license under restraint, according to Colorado court records.

Perea faces charges of possession of a weapon by a previous offender, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a weapon on school grounds and obstructing a police officer, according to Colorado court records.

Just before 5 a.m. Feb. 15, Greeley police recognized a dark green SUV, which police say had previously eluded officers on multiple occasions, at a convenience store in the 1400 block of 9th Street.

Officers approached the vehicle as two men were putting air in a tire, and both men quickly got into the vehicle. Ignoring commands from officers to stop, the driver pulled away at a high rate of speed and the driver turned off the headlights, according to the affidavit.

Officers pursued for a brief period before stopping due because of the driver’s reckless behavior, according to police. Shortly after, police found the SUV unoccupied in the 1200 block of 22nd Avenue.

Officers canvassed the area and found the two men hiding at Maplewood Elementary School, 1201 21st Ave., according to the affidavit.

Both men — whom police identified as Soto-Gallegos and Perea — had outstanding warrants for their arrest, according to the affidavit. Police identified Soto-Gallegos as the man driving the SUV as it eluded police.

Right next to where the two men were hiding, police reported finding a handgun in a pile of leaves, as well as a small plastic bag containing a white powder on the ground. The affidavit did not further indicate what the powder was.

When officers later searched Perea, they found a small bag of suspected methamphetamine, according to the affidavit. When Soto-Gallegos was booked into the Weld County Jail, police say deputies found a bag containing 14.9 grams of methamphetamine in a chest pocket of his jacket.

Perea will next appear in Weld District Court for an advisement hearing Wednesday. Soto-Gallegos’ next court date is a bond appearance April 1.
