Part one of Diagnosis: Columbus, a four-part series looking at expansion projects across central Ohio's major health systems as they respond to the region's population growth and job expansion.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Central Ohio’s rapid population and job expansion may best be reflected in the growth of the region’s hospital systems.

OhioHealth, Ohio State Wexner, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and Mt. Carmel are the four main health providers in the region and all four are currently involved in massive expansion projects – in some cases, the largest in the system’s history.

OhioHealth, the region’s largest healthcare system, includes 16 hospitals, including Riverside and Grant hospitals in Columbus. Both are undergoing major renovations and expansions totaling more than $1 billion.

Riverside is already Ohio's busiest maternity hospital and is currently building a nearly 600,000-square-foot Women's Health Center on the Riverside campus.

"We've engaged with a lot of women in our community here, and they said that they want more access to care and so we're proud to be a partner with them to deliver upon that," Kristina Stuecher, vice president and project executive of the OhioHealth Women's Health Center, said.

The new building is set to open in 2027 and will house:

185 inpatient beds  Labor, delivery and recovery rooms  New operating rooms  Mammograms  Obstetric and gynecological services

The tower is under construction in the front area of the hospital closest to State Route 315.

"It's a pretty prominent location, but location works for us for a lot of reasons,” Stuecher said. “One, this was a parking lot we could build on. It also enables us to stay connected to Riverside, and so that's meaningful for us for a lot of reasons around patient safety."

Meanwhile, at Grant Medical Center, two other projects are underway. Grant is the only hospital in the downtown district and the region's busiest level 1 trauma center.

In early March, Grant will unveil a 33,000-square-foot Primary Care Center, with more than 50 patient rooms and home to the hospital's residency program.

"Downtown is growing and we want to be able to serve the residents as well as those who are working downtown,” Jean Halpin, president of Grant Medical Center, said. “We're seeing lots of people start to migrate back down into the office setting and so being able to have that anchor here is really important. That’s our investment into the future of medicine.”

Phase two of Grant's $400 million expansion begins in March with the construction of a seven-story trauma center tower at the corner of Town Street and 6th Street. That project is slated to open in 2028.

OhioHealth is also planning another expansion of Dublin Methodist, which is scheduled for 2026. Hospital management said the expansion is part of the system's strategy to evolve as the local demand for services continues to rise.

"Employers look for strength in hospitals, strength in schools, strength in community, and by being an anchor as OhioHealth serving the largest population here, that really makes us a good partner for employers as well as attractive for people to come here to Columbus,” Halpin said.
