The veteran DH/1B will be the primary next bat up off the bench this year, featuring occasional starts at first, DH, and maaaaaybe third base in a pinch. Turner, 40, slashed .259/.354/.383 (117 wRC+) last season, including an even better 126 wRC+ over his final 190 PAs. Even in a complimentary role, he’ll be a big part of this team. No doubt about it.
Bench battlers Nicky Lopez, Gage Workman, Travis Jankowski, and Greg Allen are also getting in some work, all competing for what may be just one final spot (four bench spots quickly become one when you account for Carson Kelly, Justin Turner, and Jon Berti). But you never know what might happen on the injury front to make room for more than one bubble guy.
Newly yoked Michael Busch is back in the lineup and playing first base.

The Cubs have put a lot of faith (and money) in the eight healthy starts he made at the end of last season. But keeping him healthy and available (which hasn’t been his strength in recent years) is undoubtedly Step 1.
