"Trying to figure out who we want to represent Survivor 50 has been the most exciting, I would say, and simultaneously, single-most difficult thing any of us have ever done," he admitted. "We've had 750-something people play this game. How many are on a season? 18, 20. Not many. So we started with a list of 200 people, these people representing the season. And then we got them to 100. That was the first difficult time where we're all like, 'Man, now it's getting tough.' Then we get down to 50."
It was then that Probst addressed one of the many fan suggestions that he's received for Survivor 50 since he announced it would be a returnee season last year. If winnowing the list down is such a difficult job, why not just cast 50 players for it? You could do a mass culling that would make the quick boots of Wanda Shirk and Jonathan Libby on Survivor: Palau look like child's play.
Probst clarified that production is still at the stage of 50 players in contention, trying to assess what the next steps are. And, while he did not divulge how they are going to proceed, he did give some valuable insight as to what they're looking for in the 18 to 20 players that will eventually make it onto the cast.
"This is what we're trying to do, because we want to satisfy you," he explained. "We want a cast that represents all types of players, spanning all the eras. An array of people who have slept bled this ever-changing game design for the last 25 years. Because, really, Survivor 50 is a representation of everyone who has ever played and the fans who've been with us for the entire time. So that's what we're endeavoring to do. So you can see how difficult it would be to get it down to a handful of men and a handful of women, very difficult. We hope we get it right. Just know we're we're we're trying. That's what we're intending to do."
So what do Probst's comments of "all types, spanning all the eras" mean? Will we get to see castaways from the oldest of the old-school seasons getting their long-awaited return? Will some players from the so-called "dark ages" of the show get their due? Regardless, getting some insight into the casting process, as well as the recent announcement of fans getting to make structural decisions for the show, it appears Season 50 will truly be a celebration of an astounding 25 years of history for Survivor.
