Cubs Reportedly Signing Additional Outfield Depth in Travis Jankowski ...Middle East

So, Greg Allen wasn’t the only additional outfield signing for the Chicago Cubs today.

The Cubs are reportedly also bringing in Travis Jankowski:

I’m going to assume this is a minor league deal, given how crowded the bench group is already. Jankowski is a good outfield defender, but it’s hard for me to imagine him getting a big league deal at this point.

Jankowski, 33, played the last two seasons with the Rangers as a speedy, plus-defensive, outfield bench option. He actually had a near league-average bat in 2023 in a very limited role, but then did not hit AT ALL in 2024 (.200/.266/.242/48 wRC+). Even just against righties, he struggled (.215/.284/.260/59 wRC+). So, this purely about the defense and baserunning, and that’s why I’m guessing it’s a minor league deal.

And even then, like with Allen, it’s just about having more emergency depth. In the event that Owen Caissie is actually going to miss time, and in the event that someone else gets hurt, and/or you don’t want to see Vidal Brujan getting too much time in center, and/or you don’t want Kevin Alcántara coming off the bench, then there are scenarios where you’d want to have guys like Jankowski and Allen around. Multiple injuries can sneak up on you, and then suddenly you’re looking at that Opening Day roster and you don’t like any of your late-inning defensive back-ups or whatever. Better to be prepared now.

The Cubs chose to lose Alexander Canario, yes, but he was without minor league options and was thus likely to have to hit waivers anyway; these guys, the Cubs have on minor league deals. They could theoretically opt out at the end of Spring Training, but they don’t HAVE TO make the Opening Day roster.

That is all to say, I’m going to assume this isn’t about some other injury we haven’t heard about yet (we have seen three of the Cubs’ main outfielders playing already, plus Kevin Alcántara – the only guy we haven’t yet seen in game action is Kyle Tucker). I’m going to assume the Cubs just felt like they suddenly lost a lot of outfield depth this week and wanted to create a little more emergency coverage.
