The NBA announced Thursday morning that Bobby Portis will be suspended 25 games without pay for a violation of the league’s anti-drug policy.
According to the league’s statement, Portis tested positive for Tramadol, which is an opioid painkiller. His suspension will begin on Thursday night when the Milwaukee Bucks take on the Los Angeles Clippers at the Fiserv Forum. He should be in line to return for the team’s April 8 matchup with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Portis’ manager, Mark Bartelstein, released a statement via ESPN’s Shams Charania that insists Portis took the drug unknowingly.

Bobby Portis apparently believed he was taking a drug with a similar name called “Toradol,” which is an approved substance from the league. The Bucks’ forward received the “Tramadol” from one of his assistants who had an approved prescription for the drug and mistakenly told Portis it was “Toradol.”
Bartelstein insists that it was an honest mistake and that Portis completely respects the league’s anti-drug policy.
“Bobby Portis is absolutely not a drug abuser,” Bartelstein wrote. “Bobby works tirelessly on increasing his performance in all natural, legal, healthy ways, but he made a mistake and took a pill that unknowingly he should not have. Today, in this instance, I am so deeply disappointed that the NBA chooses to interpret its policy so strictly, and that the policy does not allow for a different result for an honest mistake with pure intentions.
Bobby loves being a part of the NBA and he loves being a role model and a true ambassador for the Bucks and the city of Milwaukee. This has been incredibly difficult for him, but he will accept the penalty with grace and turn this into a great opportunity to improve and further build his reputation and performance in every way, both on and off the court.”

Averaging 13.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists, Portis has been a critical part of Milwaukee’s rotation and playoff push. The team remains one game back from the Indiana Pacers for the No. 4 seed. Unfortunately, they will now have to try to make that jump without Portis in at least 25 of their final 29 games.
