Calvary Chapel’s Jack Riggs, Servite’s Adam Galindo reach finals in CIF-SS Central Division wrestling championships ...Middle East

WESTMINSTER – Calvary Chapel’s Jack Riggs is a late bloomer, comparatively speaking, when it comes to wrestling at the level he has reached.

Riggs, a senior, placed second at 175 pounds it the CIF Southern Section Central Division Championships, earning his first trip to the CIF-SS Masters and a possible berth in the CIF State Championships.

While many of his competitors have been wrestling since they were little kids, Riggs didn’t come to the sport until his freshman year in high school.

“It’s definitely coming in as an underdogs, and just trying to close the gap by working harder in the room,” he said. “There’s no second chances so you just try to close that gap.”

Riggs was one of Calvary Chapel’s three qualifiers for Masters out of a tournament dominated by St. John Bosco. The Braves won 13 of the 14 weight classes — their only loss came in the 285-pound title bout — and amassed 440.5 points, nearly double second-place Palm Desert (235). Servite, with seven qualifiers, was third (201).

Riggs ran headfirst into that Bosco blue wall when he was pinned by Isai Fernandez in 67 seconds in the 175-pound final.

“I think I wrestled OK,” Riggs said. “I came a long way from where I started. I was trying to get through my matches and make the best out of my last year.”

A technical fall and two pins put Riggs in the semis, where he ripped into second-seeded Joseph Aguilar of Santa Ana Valley 15-0 for another tech.

Like Riggs, it was the final shot at the Masters for Servite 215-pounder Adam Galindo, who fell 10-3 to Bosco’s Kevin Rodriguez in the final. Galindo was the No. 3 seed who knocked off the second seed in the semis.

“I feel pretty good about it,” Galindo said. “I took out the No. 2 seed but didn’t win it, so I’ll try to get him back at Masters,” Galindo said.

He was one match away from a spot in the Masters last year. A loss in the quarterfinals dropped him into consolation, and he was eliminated before the medal round.

Other local wrestlers to reach the finals Saturday were Massimo Ortiz of Servite (113), top-seeded Isaac Gonzalez of Western (132), Cross Rodriguez of Calvary Chapel (165) and sixth-seeded Jasper Lewis of Santa Ana (190).
