Resetting Expectations, Some Nikola Vucevic Concerns, Great Nate Robinson News, and Other Bulls Bullets ...Middle East

The NFL season has officially come to an (unceremonious) end, and you know what that means … IT IS OFFICIALLY BASKETBALL SEASON, BABY!

All-Star Weekend, superstars on new teams, a tight race in the West, and Matas Buzelis’ historic second-half Rookie of the Year run! What more could you ask for?

In all seriousness, while I think there are MANY captivating NBA storylines to follow over the next few months, I’m not sure any will play out in Chicago. Despite Arturas Karnisovas’ sloppy post-deadline press conference, I do feel like the Bulls will be in full tank mode until their final regular season game on April 13. Billy Donovan’s newfound willingness to uplift the young talent on this team says a lot about their intentions. And, even if we weren’t seeing this from the head coach, I would have little faith in this Zach LaVine-less Bulls team to go anywhere but down the standings. As hard as they have played in recent games, they have lost three of the last four games and hold the NBA’s third-worst net rating over this stretch (-10.8). The Timberwolves and Warriors have run them off the court in the previous two-second halves, and both instances served as a stark reminder of how crucial having true star-level talent is. Likewise, the Bulls’ remaining schedule is far from a cakewalk. Tankathon gives them one of the 12 toughest slates left, as 20 of their final 29 games will come against teams who are .500 or better as of today. This will also include one last six-game Western Conference road trip, where nearly every team they visit will likely be duking it out for postseason seeding. So with a lot of losses potentially coming up, how do we stay engaged? I’m sure many fans will tune out, but I genuinely think this final stretch could be significantly more fun to watch than what we saw pre-deadline. If we recalibrate our brains to player development mode, there will be plenty of fun matchups and learning opportunities to watch. Buzelis will obviously be the biggest storyline, but whether it be Coby White, Josh Giddey, Ayo Dosunmu, there is a clear opportunity for someone to step up in the scoring department. We’ll also want to keep an eye on how Patrick Williams continues to adjust to life off the bench, as well as whether or not Jalen Smith can see his minutes increase with Vucevic’s days feeling numbered. Additionally, how will the Bulls handle their three acquisitions from the Zach LaVine trade? Tre Jones and Kevin Huerter each saw decent minutes off the bench against Golden State, but will that continue with Lonzo Ball back in the rotation? If one thing is for sure, finding a way to get them on the floor somewhat consistently is in the team’s best interest. Whether it be evaluating who stays and who goes or boosting potential trade value (specifically for players like Huerter and Zach Collins), Arturas Karnisovas should want these new guys clocking minutes. I am very concerned the Bulls not finding a deal for Nikola Vucevic could look worse and worse. First of all, no one is necessarily going to blame the big man if he isn’t playing motivated basketball over the next couple of months. While I’m sure he’s happy he didn’t have to get up and move midseason, he is still stuck on a team in a downward spiral. Heck, there is a very real possibility that we’ve already started to see him take his foot off the gas. He’s averaged only 13.2 points on 31.8 percent shooting from long range over his last six games. Furthermore, what if Donovan begins to give Smith or Collins some extra run in an effort to help this front office with their evaluations? Even if the Bulls have laid the groundwork for a Vucevic trade come this summer, the interested party could easily lower their offer because of how he finished the year. This is ultimately why I preferred a deadline move. I just don’t see a world where Vucevic’s value goes up. If anything, the Bulls might have to work extra hard to ensure it stays at the same level. © Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images NBA fans got some very exciting news this week.
