Lawmakers call for probe into Ex-Biden official’s Middle East policies ...Iraq

In a letter to the newlyappointed chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Brian Mast, theRepublican congressman requested that McGurk be summoned to testify beforeCongress.

McGurk has been involved in USMiddle East policy for decades, starting with the George W. Bushadministration's decision to intervene in Iraq. Under President Barack Obama(2009-2017), McGurk led US efforts to support the global coalition againstISIS. However, he resigned during President Donald Trump's first term(2017-2021) over the withdrawal of US troops from the mission in northwesternSyria.

In his letter to Mast, Wilsonaccused McGurk of leading US efforts to "normalize" relations withthe Assad regime, despite the lack of official recognition. Wilson also pointedto the growing acceptance of Syria back into the Arab fold by Washington's Arabpartners.
