I feel like a genius and an idiot: for *YEARS* I have loved peanut butter sauce as an ice cream topping, but you can’t get it everywhere, and there’s basically no good take-home variety. So I get it when I can get it, and otherwise am just sad. BUT THEN LAST NIGHT I WAS LIKE DUH I CAN MAKE MY OWN AT HOME! I’ve got this powdered peanut butter protein, and you do that with some vanilla, salt, milk, and a drop of peanut butter flavoring – then you can mix in sugar if you want to sweeten – and boom. Peanut butter sauce. It was AMAZING. Why did it take me this long to realize it?!?!
Interesting, though not necessarily surprising, to hear Matt Shaw say he is currently more comfortable at third base than second base:I asked Matt Shaw if he is more comfortable at 2B vs 3B… The answer might surprise you ?FULL INTERVIEW:Watch- t.co/NYQjqCJcTrListen- t.co/vxpL00rAeA pic.twitter.com/DGtPaY5tfx
— The Setup Man – Chicago Cubs YT Channel (@SetupManKyle) February 6, 2025 Shaw has done more focused work on third base, especially recently, so it makes sense that he’d be more comfortable there (also, being a natural shortstop, he’s used to being on that side of the infield anyway). I tend to think, though, that his comfort at second base would come quite quickly if it were ever necessary for him to play that position. Compared to shortstop, it’s some modest differences in batted ball angles and spin, different (but easier) throwing angles, and slight differences in covering at second base, but fundamentally, it’s close enough to a mirror of shortstop that there are virtually zero capable shortstops who cannot handle second base. I think Shaw would probably be fine at second, if not potentially quite good; at third base, we have hopes that he can be above-average, too. I’m optimistic wherever he winds up. As things stand now, Shaw has a very good chance to win the starting job at third base on Opening Day. If something crazy happens – like Alex Bregman being signed – then Shaw could wind up at Iowa for the start of the season, or as a utility guy to acclimate. And then if something crazy happens as a part two – like Nico Hoerner being traded – then Shaw could be the starting second baseman on Opening Day. (He could also be starting there in a much more mundane scenario where Hoerner has to start the season on the IL after recovering from forearm surgery. But he’s throwing!) Tom Ricketts issued a statement on behalf of the Cubs on the passing of Virginia McCaskey: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Virginia Halas McCaskey, a true pioneer whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our city. For half a century, the Chicago Bears called Wrigley Field home and the history of our two teams will forever be intertwined. In addition to her leadership of the Chicago Bears, she was the mother of 11 children, and with her late husband Ed, they set an example of faith, family and service that everyone should admire. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Bears Chairman George McCaskey and their family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.”The @Cubs honored Virginia McCaskey today on the Wrigley Marquee. pic.twitter.com/djWYf11fSi

Speaking of Spring Training, Ian Happ reminds everyone that he and others are trying to ramp up a little earlier than usual thanks to the series in Japan:“Japan is 6 weeks away … you gotta get ramped up and ready to go.”@ihapp_1 talks spring training, Japan, and more on this week’s episode of The Compound – tonight at 6! pic.twitter.com/7t07Eu0F6Z
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) February 6, 2025 Ippei Mizuhara, formerly Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter, was sentenced to 57 months in prison for his massive theft from Ohtani. He also was ordered to pay $17 million in restitution to Ohtani and $1.1 million to the IRS. Not sure he’s going to be able to do that part. The ownership fight in court continues, but for MLB’s purposes as of this moment, the Padres officially have a new control person:John Seidler, brother of late San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler, was unanimously approved by MLB owners this morning as the Padres’ new control person.
— Bob Nightengale (@bnightengale.bsky.social) 2025-02-06T15:15:48.953Z Can the Padres now make a decision on whether they’re going to trade a pitcher? And can the Cubs make a decision on whether they’re going that route or trying to hold out for a bargain on Alex Bregman? There have been threats that ESPN was going to opt out of its broadcast deal with MLB, but now there are threats from MLB that they might not try to renegotiate if ESPN does that:Major League Baseball is warning it could walk away from ESPN if the network opts out of their national TV deal next month. A new deal with ESPN would be unlikely following an opt out, a person briefed on MLB’s thinking said. www.nytimes.com/athletic/611…

It’s a haptic display available to fans with visual impairments at Trailblazers games, so that they can physically follow along with the game as it is played:this haptic display absolutely rocks. basketball is for everyone.

It’s good for everyone. Here’s hoping the Cubs and other Chicago sports teams can get tapped into technology like this.MORE FROM BLEACHER NATION: Check Out BN Fantasy | Subscribe to The BN Newsletter
