— Rich Biesterfeld (@biest22) February 5, 2025We had no idea on a precise timeline for Hoerner, but seeing him on the field, doing work, and making throws with some intent on February 5 seems like a very good sign. Hoerner, 27, dealt with a forearm issue for most of the 2024 season, and had the flexor tendon surgically repaired shortly after the season ended.
Obviously there is still quite a bit of distance between making throws on the field and actually engaging in the wide range of throws necessary to play effectively in games, and we also haven’t seen him hitting yet. But, as far as progress goes, this just feels like a very positive step.
When healthy, Hoerner will be the Cubs’ starting second baseman again this year, and the hope has been that he will miss minimal time. The Cubs open their regular season in Japan on March 18 for two games against the Dodgers. Then they come back for the stateside opening of their season on March 27.
