Canadian sports fans haven’t been holding back since United States President Donald Trump announced he would officially impose new tariffs on Canada’s exports to the U.S.
Fans at Scotiabank Arena erupted in a loud chorus of boos during the singing of the “The Star-Spangled Banner” on Sunday afternoon ahead of the Toronto Raptors’ game against the Los Angeles Clippers.
The moment was similar to what happened in the NHL on Saturday night, when Ottawa Senators fans at the Canadian Tire Centre booed the U.S. national anthem ahead of their 6-0 win over the Minnesota Wild. Those boos, though, were not as strong as they were in Toronto on Sunday.
Trump announced on Saturday that he would impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting on Tuesday, and a 10% tariff on goods from China, which he admitted could cause “some pain.” There is a partial carve out for Canadian energy and oil exports, as Canada exports about 80% of its oil to the United States. Trump has pushed the idea of Canada becoming “the 51st state” both during his campaign and since he retook office, further angering Canadians.
Canada has since announced it will impose a retaliatory 25% tariff in response to Trump’s move on certain goods, which have been selected to hit Republican-controlled states more in an effort to try and de-escalate the situation, per The New York Times. Among the goods that Canada is targeting include liquor, poultry, honey and other household items. Mexico has vowed similar retaliation.
While it’s unclear what will happen between the three countries amid a possible trade war, Canadian sports fans seem willing to voice their opinion about the moves whenever American teams come to their cities.
