Martinez: Huge column of black smoke seen at refinery ...Middle East

MARTINEZ — Public health officials said an “incident” Saturday at the Martinez Refining Company could affect individuals with respiratory issues.

Black smoke could be seen pouring from the facility around 2 p.m. Saturday, and flames shot up from a flaring tower on the property.

A mass text message sent at 1:59 p.m. from the county said “most people will not be affected. Eye, skin, nose or throat irritation may be possible for some people in the affected area.

“If people experience any irritation, advise them to go inside and rinse any irritated area of their body with water.”
