You’ve probably heard this said many times, but a lot of people use a primer before putting on makeup to get the best, long-lasting results. You don’t want your foundation or concealer sliding off your face or cracking after a couple of hours of wear, after all. Plus, as we age, our skin demands different things, so it's important to know about the best under-eye primers for mature skin.Whether it’s because our skin has more wrinkles or needs a bit more hydration than it did in the past, mature skin needs specific primers. That's where under-eye primers come in, as they help avoid creasing in that area. So, while we might all have a favorite face primer, does that work for the under-eye area? Is it necessary to use an under-eye-specific primer? Well, Parade spoke with three celebrity makeup artists and experts to get the scoop, and they've shared the best under-eye primers for women over 50 as well. “Hydration: Preventing concealer from clinging to dryness.Smoothing: Creating a silky base that blurs fine lines.Longevity: Keeping concealer in place without creasing,” according to James.
Plus, as we mentioned before, the under-eye area can see a lot of creasing because of smiling and age. “Under eyes are typically [where] we notice the most creasing and hollowing… when we start showing signs of aging,” Leilani Green, a beauty content creator with 2.3 million followers on Instagram, tells Parade.Green also says that it’s “very possible to reduce the look of these effects” with priming under the eyes before applying makeup. “Many amazing under-eye primers will plump the under eye [area], giving the effect of less creasing and less hollowing of the eye,” she explains. “It will also let the makeup lay on the lid without sinking into those creases, and last all day. The appearance of a smooth under eye will give the effect of a more youthful face!”So, without further ado, if you’re a woman over 50 and want to try out under-eye primer, these 10 primers might be just what you need. Milk Hydro Grip Eye Primer, $25 at Milk Makeup
Milk
Milk is one of those fun brands that might look like it's for just younger people, but the hydrating power of their Hydro Grip Eye Primer is perfect for mature skin. “With aging, your eyes hollow out and need extra grip to really ensure that whatever concealer you apply stays and doesn’t go missing in those creases!” Green shares with Parade. “This one is very grippy and prevents creasing.”
Tatcha The Silk Canvas Protective Primer, $54 at Tatcha
Tatcha
James recommends the Silk Canvas Protective Primer and Tatcha is definitely one of those luxury beauty brands that stick around for a reason.“With silk extracts, it’s nourishing and blurs imperfections beautifully,” James shares.

Peter Thomas Roth Instant FIRMx Eye Temporary Eye Tightener, $38 at Sephora
Sephora
Again, hydrating your under-eye area is the key for mature skin to get a flawless finish after applying makeup. But Green still suggests the Peter Thomas Roth Instant FIRMx Eye Temporary Eye Tightener despite its lack of moisturizing qualities as a pre-primer product.“Although this product is not the most hydrating, using it before laying something like the Bobbi Brown Eye Base over it will diminish your under-eye bags as much as a product can physically do,” Green says. “I noticed that people with matured skin go for this because it quite literally and instantly temporarily diminishes under eye sagging and bags. When I tried it out, it was a bit drying, but it completely worked. It's truly insane.”
e.l.f. Hydrating Under Eye Primer on Amazon
Amazon
“A budget-friendly option that hydrates and smooths the under-eye area,” James says about the e.l.f. Hydrating Under Eye Primer. While it's currently unavailable on Amazon, one of e.l.f.'s newest products, e.l.f. Stay Cool Primer Stick ($7 at Target) seems like a comparable option. It is meant to cool skin as it preps it for makeup while hydrating it thanks to aloe water.

However, if you're not sold on adding a new step to your skincare and makeup routine, there are other ways to get similar results without having to add a primer to your daily beauty ritual. Donni Davy, an Emmy-winning makeup artist for her work on the hit Max series Euphoria and the founder of Half Magic Beauty, tells Parade that she doesn’t use under-eye primers on her “more mature clients.” Instead, she really focuses on hydrating the skin before applying makeup.“I just make sure the whole face is moisturized—that the moisture has had a moment to sink in—and then I use concealers that are high coverage, creamy and long-wear so that I don’t have to use a lot,” Davy shares. What creamy concealer would she recommend for women over 50 who might not want to use under-eye primers? “I love IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer ($29 at Sephora) for this technique,” she tells Parade. “I pat it on with my fingers or a super-soft eyeshadow brush. You need very little product; the pigment level is super high. And it has this gorgeous creamy texture that just looks like skin.”Another product Davy recommends for brightening your under-eye area (while also moisturizing it) is the Tula Skincare Rose Glow + Get It Cooling & Brightening Eye Balm ($38 at Sephora). “It is a cooling, moisturizing stick with a little pearlescent glow in there and I love putting this on myself or clients after I moisturize them,” Davy explains. “It won’t make your makeup last longer, but it’s a lovely step in the makeup routine.”Green also shares a little moisturizing trick she personally uses: she loves spraying the d'alba Piedmont Italian White Truffle First Spray Serum ($24 on Amazon) on a beauty sponge when she blends out her concealer. “This adds the exact hydration and oil that my skin needs so that my makeup comes out PERFECT,” Green explains. “This is the perfect spray that makeup artists trust. Without it, my makeup will be more splotchy, dehydrated and less smooth.”And you may not always need an under-eye-specific primer if you have the right type of regular face primer.“Here’s a little secret… Many regular face primers work beautifully under the eyes too!” James tells Parade. “Just check the label to ensure it’s hydrating and safe for sensitive areas. If it’s silicone-based and smoothing, it can often double as an under-eye primer.”
