These Chicago Bears Assistants Could Be Retained by New Head Coach Ben Johnson ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Hiring Ben Johnson as the new head coach ushers in a new regime and should also bring a bunch of fresh faces to the Chicago Bears coaching staff.

But with that being said, there *COULD* be some holdovers from the previous staff.

The Tribune’s Brad Biggs has more on that:

#Bears have a small handful of position coaches that were not dismissed and likely are potential candidates to be retained. TE Jim Dray, DL Travis Smith, LB Dave Borgonzi and S Andre Curtis are among those.Would expect team to clarify their situations in coming days.

— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) January 27, 2025

Biggs adds that Declan Doyle (the new OC who we’re still learning about) and Dennis Allen (the new DC who has ample experience and loads of success as a defensive play caller) “will likely have some input” as Ben Johnson works to round out his coaching staff. It sounds like it will be a collaborative effort at Halas Hall. Here is hoping for the best outcomes for all parties involved.

Chicago Bears assistant coaches on the bubble

Bears Special Teams Coordinator Richard Hightower appears to be lined up for a return to Chicago in 2025. If that is how the cookie crumbles, then Ben Johnson will join Thomas Brown, Matt Eberflus, and John Fox as head coaches Hightower has worked with while employed by the Bears. What a collection of names. As for other coaches who could be retained by the new regime, here is the list from Biggs:

Tight ends coach Jim Dray Defensive line coach Travis Smith Linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi Safeties coach Andre Curtis

Biggs makes it a point to underscore that the coaches listed above were not dismissed by the team. The same cannot be said for former offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, wide receivers coach Chris Beatty, defensive coordinator Eric Washington, quarterbacks coach Kerry Joseph, running backs coach Chad Morton, defensive backs coach Jon Hoke, and offensive line coach Chris Morgan. The way I see it, the coaches who weren’t sent packing last week have intrigued the new powers that be to the point where their future employment is under further review.

One thing I’d like to be mindful of is that new coaches don’t get all of their hires done in Year 1. Sometimes, not everyone on their wish list is available. There are other instances in which a coach inherits an assistant from the prior staff, likes their work, and keeps them around. I hope folks don’t see Biggs’ tweet above as a sign that the Bears are hand-cuffing Ben Johnson’s hiring ability. Instead, I think the most accurate way to view the news above is that the new coach is keeping his options open regarding coaches who are already under contract. That seems pretty heady to me.
