GASTONIA, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Fire crews are battling a large fire in Gastonia amid bitterly cold temperatures and following snow in the area.

Officials say they were called to the fire a little after 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Crews battled heavy smoke and fire. The vacant building is known to be a shelter for homeless persons in the area.

No one was injured, and officials say the fire won't spread to other buildings.

Some fire hydrants were frozen which forced firefighters to find other hydrants. Gastonia Police say East Ozark Avenue is closed near the water tower.

Gastonia Fire Chief Welch says an officer across the street saw a man walk into the building with a propane tank and then heard an explosion.

Crews say they are making progress on the fire, but that there are a lot of flames still inside the building. Firefighters anticipate being at the fire for most of the day.

On Wednesday morning a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect. Gastonia was one of several areas that saw snow overnight which prompted a series of cancelations at the Charlotte Airport and local schools.
