A matchup between Sage Hill and Fairmont Prep is among the intriguing Orange County storylines for the inaugural Kiernan Klassic girls basketball showcase at Mater Dei High on Saturday.
The all-day event, which honors former Mater Dei girls basketball coach Kevin Kiernan, will pit the Lightning (8-6) and Huskies (9-5) — ranked second and third in Orange County, respectively — in its 4:30 p.m. game.
The game will spotlight two of the county’s top juniors is Sage Hill point guard Amalia Holguin and Fairmont Prep sharp-shooter Adyra Rajan.
Rajan averages 21.5 points, on 38 percent shooting from beyond the 3-point arc, and six rebounds.
Sage Hill and Fairmont Prep haven’t faced off since the 2021-22 season when they were part of the San Joaquin League. The teams split two league games that winter.
Mater Dei (15-2), ranked No. 1 in Orange County, follows the duel by taking on Corona Centennial at 6 p.m.
The Monarchs are now led by first-year coach Jody Wynn. Kiernan resigned after last season as the state’s all-time leader in girls coaching victories with 900. He compiled the wins at La Quinta, Troy and Mater Dei.
Orange County’s other top storyline will arrive in a rescheduled opener. Sonora’s girls (9-6 entering Thursday) tip off the Kiernan Klassic against Esperanza (11-6 entering Friday) at 9 a.m.
The top non-county girls game could be Mission Hills of San Diego (7-4 entering Friday) against Sierra Canyon (13-0) at 1:30 p.m.
Reigning state champion Etiwanda (8-4 entering Friday) plays Monache of Porterville (9-4) at 3 p.m.
The Kiernan Classic concludes with the Mater Dei boys (11-4) taking on San Diego’s San Marcos (15-2) at 7:30 p.m.
In another girls event on Saturday, San Clemente plays host to an Orange County vs. San Diego showcase. The top games include San Clemente-Cathedral Catholic at 1 p.m. and Villa Park-Francis Parker at 2:30 p.m.
At the Rancho Cucamonga showcase, Crean Lutheran faces Buena Park at 4:30 p.m.
