Thomas Brown Reflects on His Time as Bears Interim Head Coach ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Between the end of the calendar year and the NFL putting the finishing touches on its regular season, it is easy to be in a reflective state of mind. So it comes as no surprise to me to hear Chicago Bears Interim Head Coach Thomas Brown sound like someone in a mindful state as he wraps up his tenure running the show at Halas Hall.

The Bears are 0-4 since Thomas Brown took over after the team fired Matt Eberflus on the Friday after Thanksgiving. This team has mostly looked lifeless as problems with slow starts, sloppy play, and problems with penalties have continued to pop up regularly on game day. There have been some silver lining moments in spots, but not enough to outweigh the negatives. Even still … Brown has a lot to look back on in his time as an interim head coach. I can certainly appreciate this bit of perspective:

“When it comes to difficult moments through adversity, you have an opportunity where you see where you are and how you measure but also how everybody else stacks up to it. I think people always talk about courage, adversity, overcoming stuff but then to actually have to go through it and endure. So, more confidence with that. I’ve always been a pretty confident person before. Even through this, I’ve become more confident when it comes to being in somewhat of a worst-possible scenario in certain ways, and still being able to power through it and just thinking about the opportunities that present themselves down the road when it’s not this adverse situation at the beginning.”

There is no denying Thomas Brown was put in an unenviable situation. It was a fun story to follow Brown’s arc — which started with him as the Pass Game Coordinator, saw him receive a promotion to Offensive Coordinator, and then move up to Interim Head Coach in the span of a few weeks. It is the kind of thing I hope we all take to heart and use as a reminder that anything is possible if you work hard enough, put yourself in the right place at the right time, and get some fortuitous bounces your way.

Then again, it should also serve as a reminder that the grass isn’t always greener. Better yet, the big takeaway is that you should water your grass and maintain it. Otherwise, you’ll be looking for your sixth different gardener since the end of the 2012 season.

There has long been an expectation that the Bears will interview Thomas Brown for the full-time head-coaching gig. Brown told reporters earlier in the week that he hasn’t been scheduled for an interview for the position yet, but will be part of the exit interviews that players will go through next week.

Even though I do not believe he is a top candidate, I feel as if the least this franchise can do for putting Brown in this mess is give him an interview, hear out what he has to say about current players, let him weigh in on what the organization can do better moving forward, and make sure he gets a letter of recommendation on the way out the door.

Chicago Bears Interim Head Coach Thomas Brown Press Conference

The on-the-field product hasn’t been great since Thomas Brown took over as the head coach on an interim basis. However, the press conferences have been far more interesting. That doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. But for me, it has nudged me to expand my thinking when it comes to the game — and I believe that has value on some level.
