Jonathan Warner, president of the Trumbull Steel Company, was confident of a prosperous 1925.

His outlook for the year as given in the Sunday Youngstown Vindicator included the following as he cited: “general prosperity to the people of our nation now seems to be well assured, largely because the experience of the past year has swept away many false doctrines and made most of us more careful thinkers.”

Warner went on to say he talked to many men in the business much longer than himself who said rewards for efforts in the steel business were at a lower ebb than he had ever known, and in many cases commodities were sold at a distinct loss.

However the year’s events indicated the American people were right at heart and they knew their best interests, he said, without political bias, because two great political parties of our country were each fundamentally right, but the outcome of the election laid aside the grave danger to our country from another and newer political alliance.

For three quarters of the game, the LaBrae Vikings were having the times of their lives. Then Kennedy’s Terry Stephens stepped in and ruined their fun. Chuck Costic’s Vikings, winless in five starts going into the contest at JFK, stunned the Eagles in the second quarter with a sticky-fingered defense that paved the way for easy buckets off steals and a 26-17 halftime lead.

That margin reached its peak late in the third quarter when the visitors went on top by 14 points, 41-27, before settling for a 43-33 advantage at the end of the third quarter. That’s when Stephens made his move. The sharpshooting 6-2 Kennedy senior plunked in Kennedy’s fist 13 points in the final stanza to pull Don Andre’s cagers within a point at 47-46. That deficit was taken care of when Paul Mokris stole the ball at half-court and raced in for the easy layup to lift the home team into the lead permanently. At the final buzzer, JFK had its fifth victory in six starts, 59-53, and Stephens had 20 points, the 28th straight game in which the forward had hit double figures.

Concerns for nearly a year of readying for possible catastrophes led to an examination of Trumbull Sheriff Thomas Altiere’s decision to make sure his department and the high-tech jail in Trumbull County Y2K-ready. Altiere had opted to test in-house rather than taking the offer of consultants offering to do the job for $8,500, according to a proposal written in March of that year. The sheriff and the jail felt they could handle the testing — that it was important because of the impact to the community.

The fear of experts included equipment containing dates might break down when the clock ticked Jan. 1, 2000, because they might interpret the “00” of 2000 as 1900.

A year of hellos and goodbyes interspersed with political and criminal drama, according to the year in review, farewells were many and included the Valley’s loss of Jim Traficant, and the retreat of BP and other fracking businesses.

On the other hand, the year ushered in the return of Jim Tressel — who became Youngstown State University’s president — and the red carpet was rolled out for gamblers and horse racing aficionados at Austintown’s new racino.
