The man lost control of the 2017 Toyota RAV4 he was driving while heading west at high speed in the 2600 block of Oceanside Boulevard at about 2:45 p.m., according to the Oceanside Police Department. The vehicle — which witnesses estimated was traveling at about 80 mph — veered off the roadway and struck a metal power pole, OPD Sgt. Clint Bussey said. The driver and sole occupant of the SUV died at the scene of the accident. His name was withheld pending family notification.
