SHELBY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A woman who lived in Shelby has been charged in a Southern California cold case from 1987. Police in Riverside, California said Melissa Avila gave birth to a baby and, within hours, left it in a dumpster. The body of the baby was later found by someone rummaging through recyclables.
