This news came as a shock to many fans who have followed Cena's career for over two decades. Throughout his time in the ring, Cena has become a household name and a role model for millions of people around the world.

The 47-year-old, who made his move into acting 18 years ago, said his final in-ring competition will be in 2025 as part of a farewell tour.

Cena is often regarded as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time and achieved world champion status 16 times since joining WWE in 2001.

"Tonight I officially announce my retirement from the WWE," he told fans in Toronto who reacted with surprise and later chanted "thank you Cena".

In a press conference after Money in the Bank, Cena shared details about his retirement and “farewell tour.”

“It’s not going to end at WrestleMania,” he clarified, referring to the event that will be held in April 2025. “WrestleMania will be my last WrestleMania, but hopefully, if everything goes to plan, we’re going straight through from January to December.”

His 2025 plans include a “long list of dates” that will “tentatively” span into the 30s and 40s to mark the end of his “in ring competition.”

Cena last appeared in WWE as part of festivities at WrestleMania 40, coming to the aid of Cody Rhodes as he battled for the championship against Roman Reigns. Cena went face-to-face with longtime rival Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson during that contest.

WrestleMania in 2025 will take place on Saturday, April 19, and Sunday, April 20, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Cena told reporters that he proposed a plan that would keep him around the franchise in different capacities, even though he won’t be competing.
