Turkey emerged victorious with a 2-1 win, showcasing their strength and skill on the field.

The Turkish team demonstrated exceptional teamwork and strategic play throughout the game, effectively countering Austria's attacks and creating scoring opportunities of their own. Their ability to withstand the pressure and maintain composure under challenging circumstances is a testament to their talent and professionalism as athletes.

Merih Demiral opened the scoring after less than a minute and netted again in the second half. Michael Gregoritsch was left free at the back post for Austria’s response after another corner in the 66th but neither team could add any more despite a flurry of chances in the rain.

. Arda Guler's corner was not cleared and Demiral pounced from close range to send their fans packed inside Leipzig's Red Bull Arena into raptures.

Just before the hour mark, the same duo combined again. With Austria piling on the pressure, a rare foray forward resulted in another Guler corner that the 6ft 4in centre-back Demiral rose to powerfully head home.

It brought the same deafening response from the stands and sparked wild celebrations on the touchline from Turkey manager Vincenzo Montella and his squad.

Demiral’s goal set off wild celebrations among the majority of fans in the stadium – and plenty outside it, too. Germany is home to some 3 million Turks or people with Turkish roots, making them the country’s largest ethnic minority, and the team has been enjoying fevered support at Euro 2024.

Marcel Sabitzer's cross. Despite several chances in the rainy conditions, no more goals were scored, and Turkey's goalkeeper made a crucial save at the end. Both teams were missing their regular captains, with Hakan Calhanoglu suspended for Turkey and David Alaba out due to injury for Austria. Alaba, who missed the tournament due to injury, showed his support for the team - which surprisingly topped a group with France and the Netherlands - and shared a moment with his Real Madrid teammate before the match.
