Chris Paul to sign with Spurs after release from Warriors

Chris Paul, the veteran point guard, will be signing with the San Antonio Spurs after being released from the Golden State Warriors. This move comes as a surprise to many NBA fans, as Paul was previously expected to join a contending team in pursuit of a championship title. However, his decision to sign with the Spurs indicates a shift in priorities for the seasoned player.

Paul's decision to join the Spurs can be seen as a strategic move to further his career and contribute to a team known for its disciplined play and strong coaching staff. The Spurs have a history of success in the NBA and are often considered one of the top teams in the league.

Golden State waived Paul ahead of a Sunday deadline that would have guaranteed his contract for $30 million next season. The Warriors reportedly sought trade suitors for Paul ahead of Sunday's deadline and released him after failing to secure a partner. Now Paul is joining the Spurs.

San Francisco, splitting time as a backcourt mate and backup to Stephen Curry. At 39 years old, Paul's scoring abilities are significantly diminished from his All-Star prime. But he remains a capable playmaker and floor general who can score in spurts.

Haynes added that Paul had a conversation with Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich and was "sold on the culture and opportunity to help elevate the game of" Wembanyama, who is already off to a strong start in his NBA career after averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals and a league-high 3.6 blocks per game as a rookie.

Paul is entering his 20th year playing in the NBA. Though he will be remembered as an All-Star and coveted player, his fit with the Warriors was questionable enough to make some wonder whether Paul's best days were behind him. Chris Haynes reported that Paul is, "eager and motivated to showcase he’s still an elite guard in this league," and was sold on the Spurs after a conversation with San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich.

Paul can come in and give a veteran presence to a young and rebuilding team—one which features the reigning Rookie of the Year in Victor Wembanyama—while hopefully playing well, too.

Paul, a 12-time All-Star who ranks third in career assists and steals, would provide the perfect veteran playmaker for reigning Kia Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio. Paul’s passing and pick-and-roll play have amplified several All-Star big men over his career, including David West, Tyson Chandler, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan.

The Spurs are fresh off drafting Connecticut guard Stephon Castle with the fourth overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft and have amassed a cache of future draft picks. These moves come as Wembanyama, the first overall pick in 2023, has already emerged as one of the brightest young stars in the league.
