Vaughan, one person lost their life and three others were injured in what authorities are calling a "targeted" shooting. The incident occurred in a residential area, sending shockwaves through the community and sparking concerns about safety and security.
This senseless act of violence serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of gun violence in our society. Despite efforts to curb this epidemic, incidents like these continue to occur, leaving families devastated and communities on edge.
Authorities were called to a residence on Casa Nova Drive near Davos Road in the city’s Woodbridge area just before 9 a.m.
Officers located four people who had been shot. One of the victims was pronounced dead inside the home. Three others were rushed to a hospital with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries. The ages of the victims were not immediately provided.
York Regional Police believe the shooting was targeted, adding that there is no risk to public safety. A spokesperson said at the scene that a suspect or suspects are still at large.
“Our initial investigation has revealed that the shooter or shooters had intentionally targeted this home; they came to this home and committed their crime,” said Const. Lisa Moskaluk.
Cops said that at around 9:30 a.m., officers were called to a home on Casa Nova Dr., in the Weston Rd.-Major MacKenzie Dr. area, and found the wounded quartet inside the residence.
So far, York detectives have not released any information on possible suspects or a motive, but said they believe the shooting was targeted and there is no risk to the public.
Police are now looking for at least one suspect, she said. There is no suspect description so far.
Images from scene showed a heavy police presence in the area, with officers going door-to-door to canvas neighbours. Yellow police tape cordoned off a stretch of the street as well.
Two schools in the area were briefly under hold-and-secure orders as a precaution while police responded to the shooting, but the order has since been lifted.
Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca said it has been a "difficult week" for the community due to two "horrible incidents involving gun crime," referring to a fatal shooting which took place at Vaughan Mills shopping centre earlier in the week.
"I have been in touch regularly with York Regional Police throughout the week and I have every confidence that they are doing everything possible to keep our residents safe," Delo Duca said.
