WARREN — A Gustavus man will begin a five-year probation sentence after completing 30 days in county jail for cutting down trees on a property that wasn’t his. William Spithaler, 57, of Davis Peck Road, operated a logging company in Gustavus when he was brought up on charges of grand theft, breaking and entering, along with a charge of vandalism. On Wednesday, Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Cynthia Rice sentenced Spithaler. The defendant will have to pay a restitution of $35,214, which is the estimated value of the lumber stemming from the incident. At the time of sentencing, Spithaler had $5,000 to pay toward restitution, his lawyer said. The property damage amounted to $1,000. Court
