Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao ended in a goalless draw, leaving both teams with a single point each. Despite their best efforts, neither team was able to break the deadlock and find the back of the net. Barcelona dominated possession throughout the game, but were unable to convert their chances into goals. Athletic Bilbao put up a strong defensive performance, frustrating Barcelona's attacking players and preventing them from scoring.
Pedri, meanwhile, came off just before the break with his third muscle injury of the campaign. A hamstring problem ruled him out for two months in August and he missed three weeks at the turn of the year with another muscle issue.
Both players will undergo scans on Monday, but Barça coach Xavi Hernández says it does not look food for either of them.
"The injuries affected the team because Frenkie and Pedri are two important players for how we want to play," Xavi said in his post-game news conference.
"Pedri's been coming good again [after his last injury], he trained really well this week. It's such a shame. Frenkie, too. He is heavily involved in our play. They are two big losses.
Moments before halftime, Pedri left the pitch in tears after suffering what looked like a right leg injury.
It is the ninth leg muscle injury sustained by the 21-year-old midfielder since the end of the 2020-21 season.
"It is a sad day," Xavi told Movistar Plus.
"We'll know more about their injuries between today and tomorrow, but it doesn't look good. We were affected by that and I imagine that both will be out for several matches."
Real Madrid's 2-2 draw at Valencia on Saturday offered Barcelona hope of cutting the gap at the top to just six points.
The draw does no favours for either side with Barcelona staying third and eight adrift of Real. Fifth-placed Athletic Bilbao have dropped further off the pace of the top four as they sit five points behind Atletico Madrid, who beat Real Betis 2-1 earlier in the day.
