Nuggets lose to Utah 124-111

Denver Nuggets and the Utah Jazz ended in disappointment for the Nuggets, as they lost with a score of 124-111. This defeat came as a surprise to many, considering the Nuggets' strong performance throughout the season.

The game started off on a promising note for the Nuggets, with their star player Jamal Murray leading the charge. However, as the game progressed, it became evident that their defense was struggling to contain Utah's offensive firepower. The Jazz took advantage of this weakness and capitalized on every opportunity they got.

Michael Porter Jr. After that transition layup, starters and bench players looked sluggish while the Jazz ran all over them. Fast break points were 16-2 at the half as Denver allowed 71 points on 61.9% shooting. Utah assisted 21 of its 26 made baskets in the half.

The Jazz won the first three quarters fairly easily, scoring 99 points through the third quarter in what was one of the worst defensive performances of the season for Denver. Michael Malone spoke last Sunday following the win over the Detroit Pistons at home that he wasn’t pleased with Denver’s defensive effort then, and the Jazz made Denver pay by making the wide open three the Nuggets offered up. When it wasn’t threes, the Jazz carved Denver’s interior defense into easy paint points and free throws.

Nikola Jokic was one of the main issues on the interior defensively, but it’s hard to blame the guy that had 27 points on 8-of-9 from the field. Jokic hit 10-of-12 free throws and made himself available as a scorer in the middle of the paint after a slow start. Unfortunately, the Nuggets were playing catch-up the entire time, and every time the Nuggets strung together some good possessions with Jokic offensively, the team defense would shatter.

Jokic was visibly frustrated when Markkanen’s driving layup put the Jazz back up by 20. He slammed the ball on the court and shook his head while going to the timeout huddle.

“Of course you get frustrated, but I’m trying to keep myself calm and just trying to help the team to somehow win the game,” said Jokic, who had six turnovers.

The Nuggets have lost six straight in Salt Lake City. Their last win was Feb. 5, 2020.

The Jazz closed the first half on a 19-7 run to lead 71-53 at the break. Clarkson, who had 16 points and seven assists in the half, scored or assisted on 11 of Utah’s 13 second-quarter baskets.
