The year is 2024, and the NFL season is in full swing. The Los Angeles Rams are set to face off against their long-time rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, in what promises to be an epic battle on the gridiron. As the teams take the field, anticipation fills the air as fans eagerly await a clash of titans.
From the opening kickoff, it's clear that both teams are evenly matched. The Rams' high-powered offense led by star quarterback Jared Goff goes head-to-head with the 49ers' formidable defense anchored by defensive end Nick Bosa. Each play is met with thunderous cheers and nail-biting tension.
Wentz scored on a 12-yard run with 4:56 to play and then converted a 2-point conversion pass to receiver Tutu Atwell to give the Rams (10-7) a 21-20 lead.
Los Angeles held on from there and clinched the sixth seed in the NFC and a trip to Detroit in the wild-card round next weekend.
The game had little meaning with the 49ers (12-5) having clinched the top seed in the NFC and a first-round bye and the Rams clinching a playoff spot last week.
The Niners’ defense failed to get off the field on third down as Wentz found a receiver streaking down the sideline as rookie Darrell Luter bit on an underneath route. That set up the Rams for a 1st & goal situation. The defense put up a good fight, but Wentz threw his receiver open in the end zone to bring the Rams within a touchdown after their kicker missed the extra point to make it 20-13.
Kyle Shanahan commented about Moody’s misses to the sideline reporter: “Uh, yeah. He’s missed two. Hopefully, he doesn’t miss anymore.”
The 49ers had to punt on their next drive. Darnold scrambled for a first down on 3rd & 2, but was sacked on the following play.
Fortunately for San Francisco, backup QB Sam Darnold has years of starting experience and has played fairly well in minimal action this season. Darnold is 12 for 20 passing for 108 yards with one touchdown and one interception in 2023. In a game that likely will resemble a preseason game in terms of major names missing, San Francisco looks to maintain momentum heading into their first round bye next week.
