The perpetrator, Vetrimaran (previously known as Pandi Murugeshwari), had undergone a sex change to marry the victim, R Nandhini. They were former classmates in a girls school in Madurai. Despite refusing to enter a relationship with Vetrimaran after his sex change, Nandhini stayed in touch with him.
