Georgia Southern 35-14, Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium.
It will look harmless enough on paper to the generations of Badgers fans that come after, but you know better; Wisconsin trailed early in the third quarter, 14-7. But Braelon Allen bounced back in a big way, and the Badgers finally started cashing in the gift-wrapped turnovers heading their way. After no points on three first-half turnovers, Wisconsin scored following all three of its takeaways in the second half.
“Coaching,” Fickell said with a laugh when asked the key to the third quarter numbers. “Glad you found a positive statistic for us. … We've been putting (ourselves) in a situation that you got no choice, right? It's one or the other. You come out the second half and you lay down, or you come out the second half and you dig deep and find where that passion is coming from.”
Mike Tressel leans on man coverage more than this group is used to, and it didn’t handle the test well against the Eagles.
GSU had six passes of at least 15 yards, and four of them came against one-on-one man coverage. The secondary deserves credit for making plays on the interceptions, three of which were aided by a hit on the quarterback or a tipped pass, but scheme and play on the back end left a lot to be desired.
Davis Brin had a fascinating day, going 33 for 52 with some incredible throws and 383 yards passing, including one touchdown. But he also threw five interceptions, and at least three (maybe four) were gift-wrapped. He also fumbled a snap for a sixth turnover.
Wisconsin found itself in another 4th and 1 deep in its own territory after a pass to Hayden Rucci netted six yards but fell just short of the sticks. UW punts it away again with 6:02 to go and the game still tied, 7-7.
Throw in some fair-catch interference on the Badgers worth 15 yards, and Georgia Southern will have the ball inside UW territory at the 48-yard line.
