Perez admits he ‘had doubts’ about returning to F1 with Cadillac ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

For much of 2025, the paddock conversation around Sergio Perez was surprisingly straightforward: a driver with six Grand Prix victories and years of front-running experience would surely find his way back to Formula 1.

Yet, Perez himself was far less certain.

The Mexican has admitted that when the opportunity arose to join Cadillac for its debut F1 campaign, he wrestled with serious doubts about whether returning to the grid was the right decision after a year away from racing.

That hesitation makes his comeback all the more revealing. While many around the sport expected him to return eventually, Perez says he needed convincing that he still belonged at the highest level.

Doubts after Red Bull exit

Perez’s departure from Red Bull at the end of 2024 was abrupt, particularly as it came only months after he had signed a contract extension.

With no competitive seats available for 2025, he spent a season on the sidelines before committing to Cadillac’s ambitious new project.

Looking back, Perez says the comeback has answered the questions he had been asking himself.

“I think I've been performing at a very high level,” Perez told RACER.

“Coming back to Formula 1, I had some doubts about coming back, but I'm really happy I came back because I managed to prove to myself that I'm still one of the best.

“I think people that understand the sport, it's easy for them to understand what level of performance I'm getting out of my car. In Formula 1, that's the most important, and I'm pleased with the level that I'm driving at at the moment.”

Those comments carry a pointed message. Cadillac is not yet a front-running team, but Perez believes his performances should be judged relative to the machinery at his disposal rather than by headline results alone.

He also acknowledged that his year away from Formula 1 was driven by more than the lack of a seat.

“I was just a little bit burnt with the sport, how unfair the sport can be at times, and I felt like probably it was time to move on,” he admitted.

“But I decided to come back, I found a great challenge and I'm happy I did.”

A life beyond Formula 1

One of the striking aspects of Perez’s comeback is that he insists he was not desperate to return. Away from the paddock, he says he had already begun building a fulfilling life outside racing and was prepared to continue in that direction if the right project had not emerged.

“I was ready," he says. "I've always said that it's very important as an athlete to have a life out of it.

“At the end of the day, Formula 1, it's sort of a small part in our lives. We hope to live a lot longer than this, so it's very important to start thinking what's going to be outside the box, and for me that was always very clear.

“I have very exciting projects that I want to do, that I want to build and stuff, so I have a very busy life out of the sport. The time that I stop, I'm really looking forward to it as well because when you are in Formula 1, you have to be 100% on it.”

Rather than portraying himself as a driver clinging to a final chance, Perez paints the return as a conscious choice made only after he found a challenge that genuinely motivated him.

Interest grows as performances impress

That choice appears to be paying off. Perez’s form with Cadillac has reportedly attracted attention from elsewhere on the grid, a reminder that strong performances are still noticed even in midfield machinery.

Yet the 36-year-old says his focus remains firmly on the project that brought him back.

“Yeah, that (interest) has been nice to see," he said. "I think always when you're performing, your value goes up.

“Obviously, there could be some movements around and stuff, but for me, the main thing is to see what's going to happen here in the next coming months. I want to see this challenge moving forward.”

For Perez, the irony is clear. Others never really doubted he would return to Formula 1. He did. And that is precisely why this comeback means so much to him: not because it silenced the paddock, but because it silenced the doubts he carried himself.
