Penn State VS. Delaware, Penn State Wins

Sport by : (PRESSBEE) -

Penn State football (2-0) defeated Delaware (1-1, 1-0), 63-7, on Saturday afternoon in Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions racked up a total of 541 yards and scored eight offensive touchdowns while holding the Blue Hens to only 140 total yards and one touchdown.  Sophomore quarterback Drew Allar continued his outstanding start to the season, completing 22-of-26 passes for 204 yards and one touchdown. Redshirt freshman quarterback Beau Pribula entered the game for Allar in the middle of the 3rd quarter and scored one rushing touchdown and one passing touchdown, his first career throwing score.

The Lions played 76 different players against Delaware, including 12 true freshmen who held their own. That was an encouraging sign for the 2023 recruiting class, which wasn't nearly as heralded as 2022’s but still ranked among the nation's top 15 according to several outlets. Four players — cornerbacks Elliot Washington II and Zion Tracy, safety King Mack and linebacker Tony Rojas — received preseason "green lights" to burn their redshirts out of camp. Lyons might be on that track now, too, after playing in the first two games. More showed that they might be ready for further action in the future.

Penn State’s front seven shut down the run game on early downs and forced Delaware to look to the air on long-yardage third downs, where there was nowhere for starting quarterback Ryan O’Connor to go. Penn State’s secondary allowed only 58 yards through the air on Saturday, with 28 of those yards coming on one play early in the fourth quarter.

Penn State erased any doubt about the middle of the defensive line after a sound performance defending the run and making Delaware’s pocket disappear. It tore through Delaware’s offensive line, recording seven tackles for loss and four sacks. The defensive effort culminated in a 26-yard pick-six from co-captain Dom DeLuca. In all, the Blue Hens held the ball for just shy of 18 minutes.

The Penn State defense followed up, on the ensuing Delaware drive, with its first touchdown of the 2023 campaign on a DeLuca pick-six with 2:43 left in the third quarter to go up 56-7.  The Nittany Lions scored one more touchdown in the fourth quarter, a four-yard pass from Pribula to Evans, to go up 63-7.
