Charleston Southern on Saturday in its home opener at Memorial Stadium.
Clemson outgained Charleston Southern by 606 yards after compiling 679 yards of offense. On the defensive end, the Tigers held the Buccaneers to 73 total yards and only 12 rushing yards. Clemson forced eight three-and-outs, registered two sacks and came up with 10 tackles for a loss.
Antonio Williams added two receiving touchdowns among his 64 receiving yards. Will Shipley led the Tigers in rushing with 73 yards, and Phil Mafah added 59 yards of his own with two touchdowns.
Scoring 28 points in the third quarter and another 14 in the fourth, Clemson looked like a completely different team in the second half. It was a great sign, and while we know there is still a lot to improve on, a response like that in the second half is what the team needed.
With a win or a loss come five takeaways. Here are five takeaways from Clemson’s bounce-back win over Charleston Southern.
Adams Jr. continued the great rushing day for Clemson, but the freshman Jay Haynes found the end zone for his first Death Valley touchdown. Clemson took a 59-17 lead.
After another CSU punt, Paul Tyson took over at quarterback. Several reserves got opportunities in the fourth quarter. Haynes caught a pass for a touchdown to push the score to 66-17.
All in all, the final score looked a lot better for Clemson and was representative of the type of game this team expects to have. The early mistakes have to stop. This is the last opponent on the schedule where Klubnik and the Tiger will be able to get away with those types of plays. It's disappointing they happened in the first place given how last week went, but the hope now is that this offense was able to find confidence on their way to 66 points before facing Florida Atlantic next Saturday.
