Eric Bieniemy is one-and-done in Chicago.
Just days after the Chicago’s season came to an end with a loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional Round, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson will be searching for a new assistant to coach up his running backs. Eric Bieniemy, who was hired as Chicago’s running backs coach last offseason, is rejoining the Kansas City Chiefs as the team’s offensive coordinator:

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero mentioned that Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce made reference to Eric Bieniemy’s return to Kansas City on his podcast. So it’s not as if this bit of news is a surprise. That Kansas City wasted little time in targeting Bieniemy, reeling him in, and bringing him back into the mix. If you’ll recall, Bieniemy coached in Kansas City from 2013-22 — first as a running backs coach (2013-17) and later as an offensive coordinator (2018-22). With Matt Nagy’s contract expiring, Andy Reid was quickly able to pivot to a coach who knew his scheme and was popular with players. This is a tough loss for the Bears.

On the one hand, it stinks losing a quality position coach. Eric Bieniemy’s arrival helped revive what was a once-dormant Bears ground game. But on the other hand, I like seeing guys get second chances and move up the coaching ranks. So, to that end, I feel good for Bieiniemy getting another shot in Kansas City. For what it’s worth, we know Chicago will have at least one new coach on its staff next year with former Boston College offensive coordinator Will Lawing joining the group. What position he will fill is to be determined.
