Death in Paradise will soon return to screens for its 15th season – and not only is Selwyn officially back as commissioner, Saint Marie PD also has a new sergeant.
"She's kind of like the cool big sister," said Catherine Garton, who plays Mattie Fletcher. "She's really easy-going, so she slots into the team quite effortlessly. I'd say she gives as good as she gets too – she can handle Mervin and finds him amusing. She fits in really well."
But Mattie "also has some maverick tendencies, so she can act on impulse sometimes because she's a bit of a thrill-seeker, which can get her into trouble every now and then," Garton added.
Don Gilet echoed those sentiments, describing Mattie as "very professional" while also highlighting her "unorthodox way of working," which fosters "a kind of mutual respect" between the sergeant and Mervin, given his own left-field tendencies.
"I work at odds with the way everyone else does, even though sometimes it's to the detriment of the team – it may be dangerous what you're doing," explained Gilet.
"That's where you see that professional side of him going, 'That's not the way to do things.'
"But there are some nuanced moments where I think there's a respect for, 'You will go the extra mile, even though it might be dangerous.'"

Death in Paradise legend Don Warrington talks "outcry" to Selwyn’s departure - and whether he’ll leave the showBeyond Paradise stars tease Humphrey and Martha’s next chapter – including whether they’ll foster againGilet also said that Mattie "comes with a little bit of baggage that we find out about over the arc of the series – there's more to her than meets the eye", a point Élizabeth Bourgine expanded on.
"Catherine and Mattie have a backstory – we'll learn more about it later – but Catherine knew Mattie when she was young, so she knows a lot of things,” she added, as Don Warrington praised both the character and Garton herself for bringing a "thrilling" new dynamic to Death in Paradise.
"It's great — it's a fresh face," he said. "You have to learn about the character, which means you're learning about yourself too, because you're relating to somebody who's different. So you have to change your perspective.
"That's always exciting for actors. You find the freshness, a new attitude, a new way of being, which keeps you on your toes – and I think that's what's happened in this series."
Garton appears to have joined the cast as a replacement for Ginny Holder's Darlene Curtis. She was said to be away caring for her sick aunt in last year's Christmas special, only appearing briefly via a mobile phone screen.
And in the season 15 premiere, viewers are also told that Darlene will be away for the foreseeable future – potentially a scheduling issue, given that Holder is returning for season 3 of BBC thriller The Capture.
But the rest of the main cast are all present and correct for season 15, which arrives on Friday 30th January. The synopsis is as follows: "As DI Mervin Wilson continues to adjust to life in Saint Marie, he and the police team face a myriad of baffling cases. While attempting to connect with his recently discovered half-brother, Solomon (Daniel Ward), Mervin’s newfound familial happiness soon turns to frustration as he realises the pair are not quite as similar as he had hoped."
Elsewhere, "Commissioner Selwyn Patterson confronts the impact of his recent absence and, after some tough love from old friend Catherine Bordey, becomes determined to win back the trust of the island."
"Meanwhile, Detective Sergeant Naomi Thomas (Shantol Jackson) and Officer Sebastian Rose (Shaquille Ali-Yebuah) help new recruit Sergeant Mattie Fletcher settle into the fold – something that may be easier said than done as shadows from her past begin to emerge."
