Ethan Hawke is opening up about his normally private life as a proud dad to Levon Hawke and Maya Hawke.
“Well, we’re here tonight as a benefit for Stella Adler. And Maya studied at Stella Adler,” Ethan, 55, exclusively told Us Weekly on Friday, January 9, while attending an All the President’s Men benefit reading for the Stella Adler Foundation at the Harmony Gold Theater in Los Angeles.
“And so I believe in these kinds of organizations because, just, the cultivation of performances in art form is important to me,” he continued. “And I see it reflected in Maya. She went to Juilliard. She’s a real thing. They’ve crushed it with Stranger Things. And I’m proud of her.”
Ethan shares two children, Maya and Levon, with his ex-wife Uma Thurman, whom he was married to from 1998 to 2005. He is also the proud dad to daughters Clementine Jean Hawke and Indiana Hawke, whom he welcomed with his wife, Ryan Shawhughes Hawke.

While appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert earlier this month, the Training Day star joked that when director Sterlin Harjo asked his two youngest daughters what it was like to have a famous dad, they scoffed.
“It’s hard having a famous sister,” he said they replied. “Nobody cares about my dad. … My sister’s picture is in the lockers everywhere.”
Like his daughters, Ethan is in awe of Maya and the success she has found as Robin Buckley in the hit Netflix series.

He added, “I have to say, hats off. I thought Maya did a great job. I thought the whole show did a great job.”
Despite her success, Ethan has also been candid about some of the trials and tribulations Maya has faced as a daughter of two famous, well-known and award-winning actors.
“There were a lot of things about her childhood that were really, really hard and complicated, and things I regret for her,” Ethan told Sydney Sweeney in a December 2025 conversation for Variety and CNN’s “Actors on Actors” series.
While Ethan refrained from sharing any further details regarding Maya’s childhood struggles, he did say that he knew she was going to “be an artist” when she was “about 4.”

“I’m proud of them for so many reasons that have nothing to do with that,” he told Us. “But they’re wonderful people, and they’re going to find their own way.”
