Makeup artists are basically magicians. They're able to take someone's natural features and enhance them, but they can also create the illusion of a natural feature using only makeup. One such trick of the trade is the double lip line, which can make lips look fuller when done correctly, says professional hair and makeup artist Kate Johnson.Johnson is the founder of The Bridal Beauty Team, a hair and makeup studio, and co-founder of Glossed Finishing Studio, which specializes in makeup artistry, professional hairstyling and more. She's sharing her years of experience with Parade to help explain the best way to fake a double lip line—or to enhance it if you have one naturally.Technique is everything with this hack. Johnson says a double lip line can make your lips look fuller if your "makeup is done right along with it." Done incorrectly, she says, "It can also make you look like you don't know how to do your lipstick and that you over drew them." So, to achieve the fullness without the messy application, she breaks down all her tips for you here.Related: The Lipstick Trick That Will Make Your Lip Color Last 10x Longer

Johnson explains, "A double lip line is when a second, lighter border is visible around your natural lip color, creating two distinct lines. The lighter line is called the Vermillion border." Some people have these naturally, but you can also fake the look for a fuller lip effect.Related: The 11 Best Lip Colors for Women Over 50, According to Celebrity Makeup Artists

Double Lip Line vs. Normal: What's the Difference?

Makeup artist and social media manager Sarah Khursigara (@sarahssuperspa on Instagram and TikTok) has a natural double lip line, and she often makes videos educating people about the topic. "I have done so many people's makeup where they're like, 'Don't put lipstick on me, it looks bad on me.' And I know exactly why they say that because I think the exact same thing," she said in a video tutorial about how to apply lipstick with a double lip line.

Khursigara has learned to embrace her double lip line as a way to achieve a pouty lip look, and her tutorials are an easy way to see how it affects the fullness of her lips. In one video turtorial, she showed a side-by-side of what her lips look like when lined normally versus how they look when she accentuates her double lip line by "pulling the corners in and pushing the middle out" with strategic lip product placement.

The end result is the "normal" look on the left that leans a bit more obviously overdrawn—and the poutier double lip line side on the right. The right side looks fuller in a more natural way.

In her video, she added that celebrities like Rihanna and Gigi Hadid also have double lip lines. You can see how full their lips look when they hit the red carpet with their double lip lines on display.

When it comes to faking a double lip line, Johnson tells Parade the look is ideal for "people that have asymmetrical lips or that have an upper or lower lip that is significantly larger than the other." She adds, "If you blend it right it can make your lips look fuller or more balanced if they aren't symmetrical."

How To Create a Double Lip Line

Johnson says an easy way to achieve this look is to "just outline your lip with a lighter lip liner" like a nude or white one, and then put a gloss on your lips. For a lipstick look, there are a few more steps involved. To start, use a lip liner one to two shades darker than your natural lip to create a shadow line "to add some depth and make the lips look fuller." She says to use the liner to "trace just outside your natural lip line. Make sure you get the bottom center and outer corners."Then you can "define your actual lip line" with a natural-toned liner "while lightly blending inward so there’s no harsh edge." Finally, she says to "apply a creamy lipstick to the center of your lips and press them together to blend into the liners to finish the look."Related: The Best Lipstick Trick for Thinning Lips, According to Master Makeup Artist Rose-Marie Swift

How To Accentuate a Natural Double Lip Line

If you already have a natural double lip line, Johnson recommends using those lines as a guide for your lip products.

First she says to "soften the outer line [on the] sides of the lips." She adds, "You want to dab a little concealer on the outer lip line on the outer halves of your lips and set with a light dusting of translucent powder. This blurs the natural double line slightly." After that, you can define your inner line. "Take your lip liner and trace the inner lip line on those same outer sections. This pulls the shape inward and adds instant structure," she says.

Lastly, you can focus on the center of your lips. "Line the outer lip line only in the center of your lips and connect the center lines with the side lines," Johnson tells Parade. "The combination of the inner line on the sides and the outer line in the middle creates that automatic pout effect." You can finish the look with the lipstick or gloss of your choice, "concentrating a little extra in the center to make the lips look fuller," Johnson adds.Sarah Khursigara also sometimes adds a lighter color or even concealer to the center of her lips to really enhance the pout. You can watch one of her video tutorials on Youtube (@sarahssuperspa) to see exactly how to create the full look on your naturally double lined lips.

Johnson has a few favorite products she likes when creating a double line.

For the darker liner used to create the shadow line outside your lips, she recommends something like Makeup Forever’s "Limitless Brown" shade ($25) or NYX's "Sandstorm" ($6). When defining your real lip line with a more naturally-toned product, she likesMAC "Subculture" ($25) and NYX "Nude Beige" ($6). For the finishing lipstick, she recommends Charlotte Tilbury "Pillow Talk" ($35) or Maybelline "Nude Thrill" ($7).

She adds that when creating a double lip line, you can also "add a gloss to the center of your lips only to make the pout more accentuated."
