"I have a very rich spiritual life. I’m not a religious fanatic in any way. I’m more spiritual but a lot of times when things get crazy during the day, I just kind of stop and just kind of draw in God’s energy or that good higher wisdom, whatever you want to call it. Everybody calls it something different," she explained.

Parton continued, "I just stop sometimes and just be grateful and just say, 'Just stop.' Just like that Scripture. 'Be still and know that I’m God.' I always love that. Just stop, be quiet, and shut your mouth. Just open your heart, shut your mouth, and just let God kind of restore me like that."

Who wrote 'Sometimes When We Touch?'

"Sometimes When We Touch" was released in 1977. The songwriter, Dan Hill, saw his song of a lost love hit peak at No. 3 on the Billboard charts in 1978.

In an interview with the CBC, Hill shared the song's sad backstory. He penned the lyrics in 1973, about a woman named Moira, who wasn't interested in a monogamous relationship with the songwriter.

Hill wrote the song in hopes that she would change her mind. Sadly, this change of heart didn't occur.

"She asked me if I loved her. And I knew that if I said yes, she would think I was too needy. If I said no, I was too cold. So that's why the first line of the song was, 'You asked me if I love you, and I choke on my reply,'" Hill explained.

"Everything in that song was right out of everything that was going on between myself and this woman, like word for word, phrase for phrase. As long as I could talk, I was fine," he continued.

"But the minute we started to touch that was it. I couldn't talk at all. I was just a goner, which is why I wrote — sorry — 'sometimes when we touch the honesty's too much.' I couldn't say a word. I was just totally rendered speechless."

Dan Hill's carefully crafted song of love remains at the top of Dolly Parton's favorites. The tender 1977 ballad continues to resonate decades later, proving that its simple honesty has left a lasting impression, even on one of music’s greatest songwriters.
