The first night of Luke Littler’s world title defence was gatecrashed by the famous Ally Pally wasp on Thursday night.
The world no.1 was forced to dodge the pesky intruder in his post-round interview with Sky Sports after beating Darius Labanauskas.
But while the sight of Littler bobbing and weaving on live TV was something to behold, there is one wasp encounter at the World Darts Championship that stands out above the rest: Ross Smith in 2023.
The darts star had just beaten Niels Zonneveld in the second round.
Smith came out on top against his Dutch opponent, winning 3-1 and booking his spot to face Chris Dobey in the next round.
However, his celebrations were cut short during his post-match interview on stage at the Palace.
As he was speaking, a wasp landed on his hand and stung him, prompting an X-rated reaction down the microphone.
“Honestly, I believe…” Smith said before coming to an abrupt stop.
Smith looked down at his hand to realise the wasp had landed on him, saying: “There’s the wasp!
“He’s just done me, he’s just stung me like a good’un. Little ******.”
As he was talking, he flapped his hand around and scratched his thumb where it appeared to have stung him.
But before he could continue with the chat, the broadcaster interviewing him on stage had to intervene.

Smith then replied with a smile: “Sorry about that!”
The Ally Pally wasp
Smith had his run-in with the unlikely visitor, but he’s not the only star to have been attacked by the infamous ‘Ally Pally wasp’.
Just a few days later in 2023, Scott Williams was forced to karate chop a wasp during his last 16 clash with Damon Heta.
Williams was celebrating when the wasp flew up to him, having to dodge and bring out some karate moves to prevent being stung.
Then in 2024, Callan Rydz was completely unaware that a wasp landed on his head during his match against Robert Owen.
Smith had to shake off the pain after being stung by the wasp on stageYoutube / Sky Sports DartsFans watched on in horror as Rydz carried on playing, with him joking to talkSPORT afterwards: “If I knew that, then I would probably have punched my head… Then I would have probably knocked myself out.”
Smith back in action
Smith will be hoping not to meet his old foe on stage this time around, as he competes at Alexandra Palace again.
The Englishman will face qualifier Andreas Harrysson in the first round of the World Darts Championship on Friday.
He will then take on one of Thibault Tricole and Motomu Sakai next, should he progress.
The furthest Smith has ever got at the Worlds is the third round, a feat he achieved in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Last year though, he was knocked out by Paolo Nebrida in his second game of the tournament, losing 3-0.
