ESPN make immediate decision on Elle Duncan replacement after abrupt exit from SportsCenter to Netflix

Elle Duncan’s ESPN exit has seen two of her colleagues pick up expanded roles.

Per multiple reports, the popular star is set to leave the network when her contract expires in the next few months.

Duncan played host on SportsCenter and in the studio for WNBA coverage, but is set to jump ship as Netflix continue a massive push into sports programming.

With NBA anchor Malika Andrews committing her future to ESPN in September, claims emerged at the beginning of December that the 30-year-old was expected to take over Duncan’s role as the network’s lead WNBA host.

This choice is a natural fit, with Andrews already having hosted WNBA coverage last year. She also fronts NBA Countdown and NBA Today.

Andrews has also resumed her role in the field as an NBA sideline reporter.

Christine Williamson is expected to succeed Duncan in some of her other duties with the network, including SportsCenter and the studio lead for women’s basketball College GameDay.

The rising star will be strongly favored to be the top host for the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.

Duncan’s previous roles worked alongside analysts Andraya Carter and two-time WNBA All-Star Chiney Ogwumike in previous editions.

ESPN goes big on women’s basketball

Viewership of women’s basketball has grown year-upon-year thanks to the emergence of superstars Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers, with some eight-figure audiences tuning in to watch college basketball. That makes the hosting role particularly attractive and lucrative.

Williamson earned a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Miami, where she was also a scholarship athlete in Volleyball.

After obtaining her master’s degree from Clemson, she built up an impressive resumé working in digital media for Fox Sports, the Big 12 Network and acted as a host and reporter for the NFL team Denver Broncos.

But she has been serving for ESPN since 2019, where she has co-hosted the 2 pm and 5 pm editions of SportsCenter alongside Matt Barrie.

Williamson has featured on ESPN’s digital platforms including SC on Snap, Hoop Streams, Rankings Reaction, The Wrap-Up, The Heisman Show and Countdown to GameDay, among many more.

But now she has earned her big promotion to the prime 6 p.m slot as she continues her fast rise at the network.

Donning a distinctive bald look, Williamson has been very vocal about embracing her appearance and encouraging others, including her co-hosts, to be their authentic selves.

“Part of my job is reacting to crazy things and you can’t pretend that you’re anybody else other than yourself because that’s going to get snuffed out real quick,” Williamson said in 2020.

“I learned early that I can only offer me instead of trying to emulate or copy what somebody else is doing and I think that’s kind of what’s unique about me. You won’t catch me as the cookie-cutter broadcaster.”

Following Duncan’s departure, there was speculation over how ESPN would proceed with their replacements.

Now, it seems they have made their decision early on, recruiting from within with Andrews and Williamson making the jump to some of the biggest opportunities the network can offer.
