Brea Olinda football revs up run game in victory over Garden Grove

GARDEN GROVE — The Brea Olinda football unleashed its rushing attack in a 41-22 victory over Garden Grove in a Kappa League game Thursday night at Garden Grove High School.

The Wildcats (6-2, 3-0) scored all of their touchdowns on the ground. Brandon Bartell rushed for three touchdowns, quarterback Carson Tracey ran for two touchdowns and Kolotolu Liti ran for a score.

“It was kind of the game plan,” Tracey said. “We knew what they were going to do on our throws. So, we got them with the run. They couldn’t stop the run either. We didn’t need to pass but the pass was open too if we needed to throw.”

The Wildcats are alone in first place at the moment and are waiting for the outcome of the Segerstrom-Westminster contest on Friday night.

If the Jaguars (5-2, 2-0) win, they will be in a first-place tie with the Wildcats.

If Westminster (3-4, 1-1) comes out on top, Brea Olinda will own the top spot and Westminster and Segerstrom would be tied for second.

When the Wildcats play host to the Jaguars in Week 9, the contest might determine the league champion.

Esperanza (3-4, 1-1) would also be 2-1 with a victory over St. Margaret’s on Friday.

“As far as playoffs go, we want to win the league,” Brea Olinda coach Justin Villasenor said. “That’s been the goal from the very beginning. We want to make the playoffs and make a little run.”

Brea Olinda’s offensive line did its job throughout the game, as the Wildcats picked up 244 yards on the ground.

But when Liti scored the game’s first touchdown on 38-yard run, the 5-foot-9, 200-pound back did most of it on his own, breaking tackles and dragging defenders into the end zone.

The Argonauts (2-6, 0-3) came back with a 76-yard scoring drive on the ensuing possession. Calvin Keovphan connected with Nathan Garcia for a 7-yard touchdown pass to cap the drive.

But from there, the Wildcats dominated, scoring four consecutive touchdowns to take a 35-6 lead into the fourth quarter.

Keovphan was a bright spot for Garden Grove. The junior completed his first seven passes and went on to complete 16 of 27 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns.

In the fourth quarter, Keovphan threw touchdown passes of 34 and 23 yards to Aaron Payan, who had five receptions for 106 yards.
